I happened upon this by mistake but apparently there are banned hashtags on Instagram, but before I provide my insight let’s provide a bit of background on hashtags and their use.

Hashtags are the bread and butter of your organic engagement and Instagram allows up to 30 per post. However be sure to choose the right set of hashtags, relevant to you content, and do not exceed the allowed amount - or it will result in the auto deletion of your caption.

Always be sure to include hashtags when you objective is to get more exposure. According to Later, a post with at least one Instagram hashtag averages 12.6% more engagement than posts without a hashtag. Paid boosts aside; targeted hashtags on your posts and stories is still one of the best ways to get discovered by new audiences on Instagram.

Start with hashtags that describe your content.

When it comes to hashtag research begin with the ones that describe your content. For example, if you are a beautician who specialize in box braids start off with #boxbraids. Search this hashtag and review it’s top posts, typically these posts will also contain relevant hashtags to your niche (your target audience of box braid fans). In the post below, @worldofbraiding also uses #passiontwists and #goddessbraids.

Remember, hashtags are used to influence content discovery and the right ones will get you connected with your target audience.

Research other related hashtags.

Selecting the right hashtags are all a part of the social media management process known as “hashtag research." I recommend doing as much research as possible so that the next time you’re posting your gym selfie and use #gains you realize it may not necessary get you personal training clientele but a bunch of influencers with the same aim.

A better fit for such a case may be posting client before and afters, or even simple at home exercises with the #transformationtuesday hashtag, in order to be discovered by people looking for weightloss inspiration and thus may be in the market for a personal trainer.

In the example above, notice how @worldofbraids utilizes hashtags like #naturalhaircare and #naturalhairstyles that may also be used by their target audience look for braids.

Why some hashtags should be avoided.

There has been a number of Instagram hashtags that have been banned. Using any of these hashtags can result in your Instagram account being closed or leave you without engagement in the notorious "shadow ban" as listed in the Instagram Community Guidelines.

Instagram clearly states that they may remove the Top or Recent posts in a hashtag page if people are using the hashtag to post content that goes against the Community Guidelines. According to research, even the most innocent hashtags have been removed because a high trend of abuse associated with their popularity. Below are the reasons why posts with certain hashtags have been banned from Instagram:

● Sharing photos that you didn't take or don't have permission to share. (Images from other users or stock photos)
● Posting photos or videos that contain nudity in the form of genitals, intercourse, and full-buttock close-ups.
● Excessive comments, likes, and follows or share that seem to be done using bots.
● Hashtags used by users to make repetive contact with people in order to sell or for commercial purposes.
● Using the platform to participate in hate groups, organized crime, and terrorism.
● Advertising sexual services, buying and selling firearms and illicit drugs.
● Blatant shows of disrepect like hate speech, threats, shaming, or degrading.
● The glorification of self-inflicted injury.
● Graphic posts or videos of newsworthy events that have no warnings or captions.

How to view blocked hashtags on Instagram.

As far as banned hashtags go we have compiled a list from the top three blogs covering this topic. There is very little from Instagram that says if these hashtags are actually banned, but take them like vitamins - you’re better safe than sorry.

All Instagram users should avoid using banned hashtags in 2020. Here's how to search if a hashtag is blocked or not:

● Go to the Explore' tab.
● Type the hashtag in the search bar.
● If you get the message below, that hashtag can be considered banned, and it may not show the related posts.
